Agreement Reached for Foreign Families to Re-Enter Israel

Breaking News: As reported earlier today, a crucial hearing of the Knesset’s Law Committee took place this morning, to vote on the government’s proposed new restrictions on travellers to Israel. Chaim V’Chessed sent Rabbi Nechemya Malinowitz of the Igud as our representative to the hearing, and his presence proved invaluable. In consultation with Interior Minister Aryeh Deri, MK Yisrael Eichler and MK Yitzchak Pindrus, the law was approved in a fashion which will allow for the continued entry of foreign residents of Israel.

Additionally, Interior Minister Deri committed to continue issuing entry permits to such residents. It should be noted that this does not cover all student visa holders, only families who are recognized as Toshavei Yisrael, residents of Israel.

Further, recipients of these permits will be allowed entry to Israel even after Wednesday, Dec 23, when the new Corona travel restrictions take effect. IT MUST BE NOTED: Passengers landing after 10 PM on Wednesday will be compelled to quarantine in government hotels. Naturally, this will apply to foreigners arriving after that time, as well. Sources tell Chaim V’Chessed that this quarantine is expected to be quite stringent, with guests confined strictly to their rooms.

The status of foreigners entering Israel for simchas, etc. is still uncertain at this time. It appears that those already holding permits will be permitted to enter the country (albeit with stringent government quarantine). It is unclear if simcha permits will continue to be issued or not.

In Summary:

  • Permit holders will be allowed entry into Israel. THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO THOSE COMING FROM FROM ENGLAND, S. AFRICA AND DENMARK
  • Permits will continue to be issued to married students through their institutions
  • Single students will NOT be issued permits at this time
  • We will update when regulations about simcha permits are clarified.
  • Those arriving before Wednesday December 23, 10 PM can quarantine at home
  • Those arriving after Wednesday December 23, 10 PM will be required to quarantine in a quarantine hotel

Further details will be published as they become available.
