In a powerful expression of empathy and renewal, 165 olim mothers of children with special needs gathered at Nir Etzion in northern Israel for the fourth annual Special MOMents Retreat, hosted by Chaim V’Chessed. This year’s retreat was the largest yet, offering a rare opportunity for mothers to pause, recharge, and find strength among others who truly understand their journey.
The retreat, designed specifically for English-speaking immigrant mothers, provided a two-day break from the exhausting responsibilities of caregiving. Participants immersed themselves in empowering workshops, heartfelt support groups, and moments of well-deserved pampering.
“This was the first real break I’ve had in years,” shared one mother. “For once, I wasn’t advocating, translating, or juggling appointments. I felt normal again—and that feeling is priceless.”
The retreat was spearheaded by Mrs. Faigie Gugenheim, COO of Chaim V’Chessed. While the program required only a minimal registration fee, it was made possible through the generous support of donors – including Eretz HaKodesh, which served as a partial sponsor of the retreat – who recognized the importance of investing in mothers’ well-being.
“These women carry an enormous emotional and logistical burden,” said Mrs. Gugenheim. “Our goal was to create a space where they could breathe, connect, and be reminded of their own value.”
Programming included expert-led discussions on navigating Israel’s special education system, therapeutic group sessions, inspirational talks, and bonding activities. The scenic backdrop of Nir Etzion, paired with gourmet meals and spa-style treatments, helped mothers truly unwind.
“It was life-altering,” said another participant. “I arrived drained. I’m leaving recharged, connected, and hopeful.”
Chaim V’Chessed, known for its advocacy and support for English-speaking families in Israel, launched the Special Moments Retreat four years ago in recognition of the immense pressures facing mothers of special needs children—especially olim, who often lack familial support and face cultural and language barriers.
“When a mother is cared for, the whole family benefits,” noted Rabbi Paysach Freedman, CEO of Chaim V’Chessed. “This retreat is a critical part of our mission to support the entire special needs family unit.”
As mothers bid farewell—exchanging hugs, phone numbers, and promises to stay in touch—the sense of community and hope was palpable.
Plans are already underway for future retreats, with organizers hoping to expand capacity and reach even more deserving mothers.
Mothers joined the retreat from 24 cites and towns all across Israel. See below!
